Grounded Theory (GT) is an innovative methodology, consisting of three prevailing traditions: Classic, Straussian and Constructivist GT. Despite their significant divergence, the three factions of grounded theorists claim the same origin and continue to embrace a number of the original methodological techniques penned by Glaser and Strauss in the original GT Grounded theory is a general research method for behavioral science developed by the sociologists Barney Glaser (b. 1930) (trained in quantitative sociology by Paul Lazarsfeld) and Anselm Strauss (1916-1996) (trained in symbolic interactionism by Herbert Blumer). Glaser and Strauss are recognised as the founders of grounded theory. Strauss was conversant in symbolic interactionism and Glaser in descriptive statistics. 8 –10 Glaser and Strauss originally worked together in a study examining the experience of terminally ill patients who had differing knowledge of their health status. Some of these suspected they were dying and tried to confirm or disconfirm their suspicions. Strauss, whose grandparents were German immigrants in the United States, was born in New York City and grew up in Mount Vernon, New York.
